Citations and refusal

A document answer names the file and page it came from. When the folders you granted do not support an answer, the runtime says so instead of producing one.

Why refusal is the feature

A system that answers everything is easy to build and impossible to rely on: you cannot tell a good answer from a confident one by looking. An answer that cites a page can be checked in a click, and a refusal tells you the question needs a different folder, or a different tool.

What the citation means

It names the file and location the retrieval step actually returned. It is not a guess at where the answer might be found, and it is not generated from the answer after the fact.

The current limit

Retrieval is lexical: it matches words rather than meaning, so a question phrased in vocabulary the document does not use can miss. Semantic retrieval is in validation. We publish this because retrieval quality decides whether any of the above is useful.
